Northern Manhattan Pediatric & Perinatal Adherence Initiative
ABOUT
Currently, the Northern Manhattan Pediatric & Perinatal Adherence Initiative (formerly known as the Northern Manhattan Adherence Initiative) is in its sixth year of adherence support. Although the initiative has taken on a new name, the goals and foci have not altered in their direction or intensity. Through funding from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute the project continues to investigate new methods of support for and means to improve HIV medication adherence services at Metropolitan Hospital and NY Presbyterian Hospital. These methods to improve HIV medication adherence involve utilizing specially trained site staff, formally know as Intervention Specialists, who tailor education and counseling for HIV-positive clients and caregivers in order to move them along a continuum of adherence commitment. The ultimate goal is to move the clients to a level of maintenance and to provide education and tools for the client and caregivers to sustain adherence to HIV medications. The goals of these efforts are not only to improve medication adherence but also to improve overall health of the clients.
The focus of the program is on helping children, adolescents, and their caregivers increase their ability to take or administer HIV medications as prescribed to promote overall good health and long term commitment to medication adherence. Additionally, the intervention focus has expanded to include support for increasing the ability of pregnant women, receiving services at the two sites, to take HIV medications.
Additionally, the project provides programmatic support for a caregiver support group, through a donation from Town Total (a licensed and JCAHO-accredited homecare company and pharmacy) for parents and guardians of HIV-positive children and adolescents. Drawing attendees from
Metropolitan Hospital,
NY Presbyterian Hospital, and
Harlem Hospital (a previous intervention site), the luncheon provides a forum for caregivers to discuss issues pertinent to providing care to HIV-positive children and adolescents.
